The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) is recognised as being at the cutting edge of eye research and clinical trials in Australia. It has consolidated expertise in the conduct of clinical trials and is closely associated with the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH), and affiliated with the University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology, creating a centre of excellence in eye research. CERA has also been designated as a Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the only such centre in Australia.

The CERA Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU), is a newly establishment unit and the future establishment of the Eye Trials Research Network (ETRN) are two initiatives currently being undertaken to streamline clinical trial conduct at CERA. The primary objective of both CTRU and the ETRN is to facilitate increased recruitment potential for sponsors in the most expeditious, coordinated and cost effective manner, thereby, attracting more trials to Australia.
